Before we do a deep dive into catgirls and tentacle monsters (just kidding, the tentacle monsters are also catgirls), something to keep in mind: anime is not a genre but a medium, just like live action television, film and novels are all mediums. This means it encompasses a wide array of genres, audiences and narratives that may each have their own tropes and common elements. This is neither a good thing or a bad thing, just like say, sci-fi shows in the US also have their own tropes. It’s simply a knock-on effect of storytelling.
Cool? Cool.

Welcome to a new attempt to bring back a Friday Five column! And what better way to kick it off than with a topical clickbait headline, because this is my blog and I can do what I want.
While Scream is probably the best known of the meta films in horror, there are plenty of other movies and TV shows that have commented on the genre. Some of these you probably know if you’re a fan, while a few you might be encountering for the first time. Trying out this whole blog thing again. Keep watching this space...
